DROOL: When do you feel you first found success in the world of art, and how have you grown since then?
Ben: I believe I have found success in many areas of the art world. On a personal level, when I create something that truly makes me happy or just simply enjoying the process of designing an illustration. To be proud and excited about the work I am producing is the most rewarding success. In terms of my career, I have found that 2022 has been really transformative with the kind of clients that have been approaching me. I still have a long way to go but I trust that this year is the beginning of my success as an Illustrator.
DROOL: How did you discover your voice in art?
Ben: I preach that practice makes perfect. I think that my style evolves every time I start a new illustration. But honestly, it’s really difficult to pinpoint how it started. I’ve always had an interest in fashion and character design. Once I decided this was what I wanted to focus on, it was a lot easier to develop my voice in art and be strict with how I approach my work.
DROOL: What compels you to keep driving forward as an artist? How do you aspire to grow as an artist this year?
Ben: The more I immerse myself in the industry, the more I discover so many incredible opportunities. I’m finding so many talented artists from all over the world that work with clients I could only dream of. I imagine my career becoming a similar standard on a daily basis, this inspires me to keep pushing forward. This year I’d like to be more consistent with my work, feel more confident with quoting higher prices to clients and hopefully get represented by an agency.
DROOL: What about dogs attracts you to them as subjects for your artwork?
Ben: I find it fascinating how there are so many different dog breeds and they come in all shapes, sizes and colours. For some strange reason, I love idea of seeing someone in an eccentric outfit casually walking their unusual dog breed. Sometimes it feels like a fashion statement which I find hilarious.
DROOL: Which do you prefer: dogs or people, and why?
Ben: I definitely prefer dogs, they can be so outrageous but they’ll always love you!
DROOL: What characteristics in dogs/breed of dog do you relate to most, and why?
Ben: I can definitely relate to cocker spaniels. They go from 0-100 in a minute. Bursts of high energy to passing out on the sofa sums me up pretty well. Maybe this is because I had to look after one when I worked at a dog boarding home in Melbourne. I fell in love with a cocker spaniel called Maya, she had giant paws and loved to have a cuddle.
DROOL: Anything else you want to share with the dog-loving humans of Earth?
Ben: If you want a good laugh I recommend googling all the different names for poodle crosses. There are over 50 and the names for these ‘new breeds’ are so ridiculous it’s impossible not to laugh. My favourites are ‘Havapoo’ – a cross between a Havanese and Toy Poodle. And ‘Bossypoo’ – a cross between a Boston Terrier and poodle.
