When we first saw Jud Beaumont’s dog houses crafted to look like Airstreams, we were hooked. When we dug in a bit deeper we realized that Jud was magic in the way he gave personalities to inanimate objects. He added life and question into everyday objects with unmatched craftsmanship. This past February Jud left us all too early.
"My first dog portrait was for a friend whose husband wanted to stuff their dog after it died and display it in the front room. She thought a painting to remember the dog would be a better idea."
Jud’s wife, Kate Beaumont is a friend of BIXBI who helps us get our products to all the good dogs in Western Canada. She made it possible for us to share some of Jud’s coolest, most dog-centric work and gave us some insight into Jud’s world.
Jud wanted people to understand that furniture could be fun, could brighten a room and could be most unconventional yet still functional. Jud’s approach to furniture was seen as engaging, whimsical and surreal. Dogs added another dimension to Jud’s creative reputation and undoubtedly another level of character and fun to his work.
Dogs added another dimension to his creative reputation. Jud created The Bad Table – a simple table that had lifted a leg to pee – and this piece drew tremendous attention. Jud took his fondness for Airstream Trailers and created smaller versions that were suitable for dogs – ‘Pet Campers’ as they were known. With an assorted collection of Pet Campers, Jud showed these works in various shows and venues. The most documented of the Pet Campers was the original silver camper with our beloved Westie ‘Dewey’ as the super model! Dogs undoubtedly added another level of character and fun to his works.
