DROOL: When do you feel you first found success in the world of art, and how have you grown since then?
Nate: At a young age I received recognition and decided to continue with art but even after college I didn't know how to paint. I then set a goal to complete at least 30 paintings each year & decades later I am practiced and very comfortable as a painter.

DROOL: What about dogs attracts you to them as subjects for your artwork?
Nate: My first dog portrait was for a friend whose husband wanted to stuff their dog after it died and display it in the front room. She thought a painting to remember the dog would be a better idea. Dogs are all very different in shape, colors, sizes & expressions - which makes for very fun subject matter!

DROOL: What do you find most inspirational about dogs?
Nate: Just the freedom to pose them how you want to and their unique attitudes. They don't seem to get too upset at their likeness like people do at times.

DROOL: Did dogs help you discover your voice in art? If so, how?
Nate: It's funny that I don't currently even have a dog but it has been fun to connect people with their pets. I have found that to be the best kind of art - the emotional stuff that connects!

DROOL: Do you like dogs more than people, and why or why not?
Nate: I do like the people more, but dogs will never give you the harsh criticism of your paintings.

DROOL: If you had to choose one dog breed to characterize who you are, what breed would it be and why?
Nate: I have always related most to bulldogs because they seem so relaxed and easy going – that is what I am and aspire to be.
